NEW HAVEN, CT, June 12, 2009 — Mason Onofrio Public Relations in Bethany, CT, and the Kotchen Group of West Hartford, CT, have earned “Best in Show” awards for Public Relations Campaign and Tactics, respectively, at the 2009 Mercury Awards, hosted by the Southern Connecticut, Westchester/Fairfield and Connecticut Valley chapters of the Public Relations Society of America.
The awards were presented June 11 at Anthony’s Ocean View in New Haven, among a total of 40 awards given at the fourteenth annual Mercury Awards, which recognizes outstanding work in the public relations, communications and marketing professions. Entries were judged by the Western Michigan Chapter of the PRSA. Desiree Fontaine and Gil Simmons News Channel 8 WTNH emceed the event.
Public relations professionals have the opportunity to gain recognition for their work by entering the 2009 Mercury Awards, a competition sponsored by the Connecticut Valley, Southern Connecticut and Westchester/Fairfield Chapters of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA). The competition, founded in 1997, is open to professionals in Connecticut, Westchester County and Lower Hudson Valley in New York, and southern Massachusetts who are responsible for the creation of communications, marketing or public relations strategies or tactics. The Mercury Awards ceremony and dinner will be held on Thursday evening, June 11 at Anthony’s Ocean View in New Haven, Connecticut.
Any communication program or product produced in 2008 may be entered. One gold and silver winner may be awarded in each category. There are 21 categories in tactical, single-item entries and 10 categories of strategic campaigns, including special events and marketing products and services. Judges for the competition will be PRSA members from a sister chapter in the U.S.
Nominations are also being accepted for Practitioner of the Year, honoring a PRSA member in the tri-chapter area who has significantly served the profession through a history of achievement, experience and reputation.

The first National membership promotion of 2009 will run from February 1 to March 31. Prospects may join for $290 ($225 national dues and $65 initiation fee) and receive a free, first year Chapter membership when they do - the cost is subsidized by National. Jim Cameron and Amy Fond of Cameron Communications, Inc. of Darien, made a presentation on the importance of media training at the Southern Connecticut Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America’s luncheon program April 1 at Quinnipiac University.
Cameron and Fond reviewed some video case histories of people in interview situations, analyzed their messaging mistakes and discussed how media training could have helped.
Hamden, Conn. – Michael St. Peter, vice president of news at WVIT-TV, NBC 30, was the guest speaker at the Southern Connecticut Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America’s media luncheon March 20.
St. Peter discussed the best practices public relations professionals can use to get their organizations and clients coverage on NBC 30, the NBC affiliate in Connecticut.
Alex Halavais, assistant professor of communications in the School of Communications at Quinnipiac University, presented “Web 2.0: Finding a Niche in the Network” at the meeting of the Southern Connecticut Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America Feb. 27.
Halavais’ presentation addressed the evolution and future of these systems, what they mean for the flow of information and strategies for effectively communicating a message within the socially networked web.
Greg Trevor, senior director of media relations at Rutgers University, was the keynote speaker at the last meeting of the Southern Connecticut Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America Jan. 24 at Quinnipiac University.
Trevor discussed how the Rutgers women’s basketball team found itself in the national media spotlight last spring after popular radio personality Don Imus made some controversial comments about the university’s women’s basketball team. He made a presentation about how the university’s communications team successfully handled the crisis.
Weber discussed the best ways public relations professionals can work with News Channel 8, the ABC affiliate in Connecticut, and its sister station, MyTV9.
